FRESHWATER
PEARLS
...
Freshwater pearls are
cultured pearls grown in freshwater molluscs in lakes
and rivers. They provide an affordable alternative to
their salt water oyster pearl cousins. Freshwater pearls
generally are elongated in shape and have a milky
translucent appearance. In China, shape and lustre are
rapidly improving and round freshwater pearls are
readily available.
Pearls come in a wide range of dyed colours in addition
to natural. Only two percent of all freshwater pearls
are round or near round. Though this number seems quite
small, the abundance of freshwater pearls is much
greater than other pearl types. Each freshwater mussel
will produce up to 40 pearls, whereas one saltwater mollusc
usually only produces one or two pearls.
Tip: Pop
your pearls on last before departing to prevent chemical
damage to their nacre through perfumes and makeup. It is
advisable to wear pearls from time to time or to give
them a drink of water to maintain their lustre.
A pearls surface can scratch easily so treat them
tenderly.
